‘MeltDown’ GUCCI bags …

2009 August 1

Gucci less 1Gucci Group, criticized by fashion journalists last year for risking its main brand’s cachet, made “less ostentatious” handbags ( really?) as shoppers demanded tamer styles in the recession, Chief Executive Officer Robert Polet said.

Gucci’s new Pelham and Jackie “you need to see these economic”  handbags are “more subdued” than boom-year models, because consumers don’t like to flaunt their money at a time of an economic crisis ( wow! this is news), Polet told journalists today on the sidelines of parent companyPPR SA’s post-earnings Paris press conference.

“The bags don’t scream Gucci ( and so what?), they don’t flaunt the logos (come to Nigeria to see them at local markets),” Polet said of the new design for the $3,100 Jackie handbag ( now you see what I mean by these new ‘economic’ handbags). “Yet the shape is instantly recognizable as Gucci.” He also said the brand’s sales staff  had been instructed to be “less pushy” during the economic crisis – (really, how do you push someone to fork out $9,900 for a handbag?).

Amazing meltdown period for some, hehn.

So it is comforting to read that Logos will be suspended during these tight times, what a treat for the black market.

How about seeing for your self, what all the fuss is.

...a mere $3,100

...a mere $3,100

...different colour same $3,100 tag

...different colour same $3,100 tag

...$3, 250 (without the logo)

...$3, 250 (without the logo)

...now its getting interesting with a $5, 990 tag

...now its getting interesting with a $5, 990 tag

...a whopping $9, 900 - what can I say?

...a whopping $9, 900 - what can I say?

I just kind of have a feeling that, while I like it, that is not the price (don’t get me wrong), the fact that it is a Logo-less Gucci bag, I have a sneeking feeling that it will not go down well overhere in Nigeria. How on earth will anyone know that the $10,000 , N1.4million bag is a Gucci without the logo? Just a thought ….ladies and gentlemen, over to you. Have a fantastic weekend (I know it’s not funny).

I think it is ridiculous that they even call these bags economical… What is economical about a bag that costs $3500? Let’s call a spade a spade. These bags are simply a more conservative version of the regular ones. Anybody who is familiar with Gucci designs will still be able to tell they’re Gucci. The economical term is just for the consumer’s conscience…. But don’t get me wrong, I happen to own a few designer bags myself… :-)

My sister got the “economic bag” i doubt she knew it was that when she purchased it:)it was just a nice gucci bag that didnt scream gucci. Very few nigerians are secure with themselves, thus the only way to let people knw they ve arrived is wear branded designer outfits.
