Why do we like fooling ourselves as a nation? Why?
If you are shocked by the revelations of the Panama papers, then you are not living in the real world. These papers are only the tip of the iceberg. Is it any wonder the wealthy evade and not avoid (if permissible) paying tax? This time around, the coverage is global and hasn’t been confined to crooked Africans.
The not so interesting thing is that some foreign government officers named have already resigned. Resigned not because they are sorry, of course not. Resigned because they have been caught. But resigned they did, so as not to cause further damage to their position in power.
Not for a minute would you expect resignations from the African continent. Resignation is just not our culture. Why must the officer resign? What for? Everybody does it they would lambast arrogantly in their defence.
As for those who are clamouring for Buhari to probe and persecute, personally, I think its a bloody waste of time. Buhari, right now, has too much on his plate to swallow. Those that have been probed by EFCC, what has become of them? Absolutely nothing. So spear us further patronising gestures. Just let it be, and may the Nigerian series of ‘Hunger Games’ continue.
(The Hunger Games universe is a dystopia set in “Panem“, a country consisting of the wealthy Capitol and twelve districts in varying states of poverty. Every year, children are chosen to participate in a compulsory annual televised death match called The Hunger Games.)
