“We’ll not leave Rio without medals’’ says Nigeria’s Most Embarrassing Sports Minister, Solomon Dalung.

The Olympic games are a few days to its conclusion. Countries on the  medals table are represented because of the meticulous sacrifice of its athletes and financial planning and support of the governing sports councils of each country. I am not aware of any financial contributions received by athletes in Brazil at this stage of the games, with the exception of the Nigerian contingent whose pledges are just been honoured by various donors, with the Federal Government as the chief donor.  What is SO WRONG with this country? Why are our priorities as a nation misplaced? Athletes who need real cash at the preparation stages are given promissory notes  after a victory in a photo opportunity. Why must I been permanently consumed with anger at Nigerian politicians? Why?  Solomon Dalung is such a Nigerian embarrassment that needs to be booted from office. But it never happens in Nigeria. Never. There is no such thing as embarrassing Nigeria.  President Buhari, if you chose this man as your Sports Minister to fill a quota and not because of his qualification, then you have failed.

The organisation of Sports is a PROJECT in countries such as China, America and United Kingdom. They organise, make medal projections and back it up with funding. It takes 4 YEARS of uninterrupted planning and not 4 weeks. The talents are here in Nigeria, but the financial support isn’t.

Each sport MUST DELIVER in order to qualify for funding. It is highly competitive.  It is pure HYPOTHESIS to suggest the medals table is represented according to wealth. Complete RUBBISH.  Why aren’t these countries at the very top –AlgeriaAngola Ecuador Gabon Indonesia Iran Iraq Kuwait Libya Qatar Saudi Arabia United Arab Emirates and Venezuela. Y.ou must have guessed right. They are members of OPEC – Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries.

An example is the United Kingdom.  With a population of 64.1 million (2013) they have managed  to turn its sporting fortunes around. It’s not by brandishing unwise Solomon Dalung words, No! It is by its sheer determination and organisational abilities. The Great British Athletes are funded by the National Lottery.

“National Lottery money is distributed by 12 independent organisations, including UK Sport, each with specialist knowledge of their sectors.

All are arm’s length from Government and follow strict guidelines  when deciding who should receive National Lottery funding.

Since National Lottery funding for the elite sport began in 1997 British athletes have won 633 Olympic and Paralympic medals” – source – UK Sport

Since UK Sport was established more than 4,600 athletes have benefited from National Lottery support.

In Nigeria, the situation can not be glaringly different.  The government is in CHARGE of sports and every other sector. In Nigeria, almost every sector is dependent on crumbs from the tables of the governments, Federal and states. When the government is broke, it is felt by every single sector.

It is not enough to pray, without accompanying it with hard work. It is not enough to be patriotic, to be consumed with protocol riddled with inefficiency.  Things are not working in Nigeria. Period!

I was expecting a RADICAL CHANGE by the Buhari’s administration, it hasn’t come and may never come. Nigerians will forever continue to compete on the platforms of Social media, beer parlours and queues to discuss its problems. Nigerians are very good at analysing.  There is no real commitment to change for the better. I am no longer convinced there is.

Why must I be permanently consumed with anger at Nigerian politicians? Why?  Solomon Dalung is such a Nigerian embarrassment that needs to be booted from office. But it never happens in Nigeria. Never. There is no such thing as embarrassing Nigeria. No one RESIGNS.  President Buhari, if you chose this man (Solomon Dalung) as your Sports Minister to fill an ethnic quota and not because of his qualification, then you have failed Nigerians. It is unfair to be saddled with this  joker.

What exactly does he mean when he said  “we’ll not leave Rio without medals’?  He must have been delirious after the N30m Union Bank  donation.  APC, this is no change. This is WORSE! – Jide Salu

Read how Vanguard reported Solomon’s magnanimous verbal gesture. was that suppose to be an inspirational statement?

Solomon Dalung, Sports Minister, has reassured Nigerians that the efforts of Nigerians competing at the Rio Olympics would not be in vain as he noted that “we’ll not leave Rio without medals.’’

The Minister who was speaking after Union Bank redeemed their pledge of N30 million donation to support the nation’s participation in the Rio Olympics said he was optimistic that Nigeria would still win medals in the remaining events at the Olympics.

The Minister while appreciating the efforts of Union Bank for throwing their weight behind Nigerian athletes said that he was convinced that Nigeria would not leave Rio empty handed. ‘’We’re grateful for your donation and we promise to ensure transparent management for you to do more’’

Yinka Kadejoh, Events and Sports Officer of Union Bank presented cards loaded with N250,000 to each of the athletes to be used anywhere in the world.
