A Virgin Atlantic passenger jet flying from Lagos to London Heathrow declared a mid-air medical emergency and landed in Marseille.
The Airbus A340 which departed Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Ikeja, Lagos at 10.59am was scheduled to land at London Heathrow airport on Thursday evening at 4.55pm.
But five hours into the journey, at 32,650ft the captain issued an alert for a priority landing and urgent medical assistance after a passenger fell ill.
Flight VS652 diverted to Marseille Provence Airport. The aircraft has landed safely and the ill passenger will be met by emergency services.
The flight is expected to continue its journey on to London Heathrow.
A spokesperson for Virgin Atlantic told MailOnline: ‘Unfortunately one of our customers required urgent medical assistance while flying from Lagos to London Heathrow on our flight VS652 today.
‘The Captain has requested a priority landing at Marseille and the flight will be met by the medical services who will take care of the unwell customer.
‘The flight will then continue its journey onto London Heathrow. We’re sorry for the delay and any inconvenience caused.’
