Trevor Noah, South African Comedian to host major US late night show.

Screen Shot 2015-04-09 at 19.45.17On March 30, Comedy Central’s the Daily Show announced that 31-year old Trevor Noah will replace John Stewart as the host. As the Daily Show’s twitter handle put it: Noah is just “another guy in late night from Soweto.” The announcement of his new position has drawn a great deal of attention, both positive and negative.

The intial response was overwhelmingly positive in South Africa and the United States. To an American audience it was refreshing to see an international voice on a news platform, not to mention the first mixed-race host of a major late night show. To South Africans, his success in the United States has been inspirational, a fellow South African comedian, Marc Lottering, has said: “This is not only fantastic for Trevor, but also for young Africans who have big dreams.”

However, this initial wave of excitement subsided as some of Noah’s older Twitter posts generated a negative backlash. The comments, which made fun of many different groups, were quickly picked up by the media and led to a flurry of commentary calling him offensive, misogynistic, homophobic, and racist. In particular, he has been categorized as anti-Semitic due to tweets such as: “Almost bumped a Jewish kid crossing the road. He didn’t look b4 crossing but I still would hav felt so bad in my german car!” and “South Africans know how to recycle like Israelis know how to be peaceful.”Screen Shot 2015-04-09 at 19.45.33

The anti-Semitic allegations have been overwhelmingly American. Some have said that they will no longer watch the show due to his comments, and called for his removal. The American Jewish Congress, an association of Jewish Americans organized to support Jewish interests, petitioned its supporters to call on the Daily Show to rescind Noah’s contract. Meanwhile, the South African Jewish Board of Deputies (SAJBD) released a statement supporting Noah: “Negative stereotypes of all people are potentially offensive. However, the SAJBD believes that tweets made by Noah do not constitute anti-Jewish prejudice on his part. Trevor Noah’s style of humor is playful, and is intended to provoke a response. The SAJBD wishes him all the success and wisdom that he will require in his new position, and is confident that he will do our country proud.”

So, why does an American audience find it so offensive that Noah makes misogynistic, homophobic, and racist jokes when American comedians make similar jokes? Typically, it seems that comedians in the U.S. focus seemingly offensive jokes towards audiences they identify with, such as Chris Rock commenting on African Americans and Sarah Silverman making Jewish jokes. Noah, growing up in a mixed race family (his father is Swiss-German and his mother is of Xhosa and Jewish heritage) in Apartheid South Africa and maturing in the ‘rainbow nation,’ may not culturally identify in the same way that Americans and American comedians do. In today’s increasingly international media, this may be something to get used to for an American audience.

For their part, Comedy Central and John Stewart defend their choice of Noah.

VIDEO: SHOCKING MOMENT BURLY SHIRTLESS BUILDERS BEAT UP TRAFFIC WARDEN WITH HIS OWN RADIO.

SHIRTLESS BUILDERS BEAT UP TRAFFIC WARDEN-jide-saluThis is the shocking moment a traffic warden was whacked across the head with his radio by builders following a dispute over a parking ticket.

Video footage captured on the phone of a passer-by shows the builders racing up to the officer shortly after he issued a ticket to a van parked in Agincourt Road, Hampstead.

Two of the topless builders can be seen launching a volley of punches and kicks onto the victim until he falls to the ground.

He was able to get help from the police and London Ambulance Service after pressing a panic button on the machine.

The 45-year-old, whose name has not been revealed, was treated at the Royal Free Hospital for facial bruising and a head injury after the attack. He also needed six weeks off work and still suffers from blurred vision.

The father-of-three told the Ham & High: “I had issued a ticket to the van when one of the men started arguing and hit me on my chest. Then the other two arrived and joined in. They were kicking and punching me and one of them hit me on the head with my radio.”

Kevin Lee Ritchie, 36, was given a three-month jail sentence, suspended for six months and ordered to carry out 200 hours of community service.

Shaun Ritchie, 28, and Loon Cuong Chu, 27, were ordered to do 180 hours of community service.

They were each ordered to pay compensation and court costs adding up to £1,320.

Oronto Douglas, President Jonathan’s top aide, is dead.

oronto-douglas-jide-salu

Oronto Douglas, the Special Adviser to President Goodluck Jonathan on Research, Documentation and Strategy, is dead.

Mr. Douglas, 49, a presidency source said, passed on at the State House clinic at 4:58 a.m. Thursday.

The real cause of his death is unknown at this time, but the presidential adviser is said to have managed a terminal illness for sometime, and had, from time to time, sought treatment abroad for prolonged periods.

Born 1966, Mr. Douglas is regularly described as one of Mr. Jonathan’s most brilliant and influential aides, documenting the President’s achievements and legacies, and helping coordinate parallel media and campaign strategies for the presidency.

“He was one of those who had the most far-reaching influence on President Jonathan,” a presidential aide said.

A lawyer and committed environmentalist, Mr. Douglas was a commissioner for information in Bayelsa and was a delegate from the state for the 2005 National Political Reform Conference organised by the Olusegun Obasanjo administration.

He emerged one of the shinning stars of that conference as the Niger Delta region pushed for improved revenue allocation to the area to mitigate the effect of oil exploitation.

Mr. Douglas’ last Facebook post was on March 8 when he shared the video of Mr. Jonathan’s interview with foreign news channel, Al-Jazeera, in the runup to the March 28 presidential election.

“The Conviction with which President Jonathan says “I Will Not Lose the Election’ is compelling almost to the point of prophesy. This is a President well connected to his people,” he wrote in what appears his analysis of Mr. Jonathan’s performance in the interview.

NEW EMOJIS: Black Emojis feature in Apple’s latest iOS 8.3 release to public…

New Emojis

I believe that the most interesting feature in iOS 8.3 is the redesigned Emoji keyboard. You can now select from over 300 new characters with many new skin tone options. The diversity in the previous Emoji keyboard version was lacking because there was just an Asian man wearing a gua pi mao cap and an Indian man wearing a turban, but there were no black people represented. Apple also added many more relationship- and gadget-related Emojis. For example, there are now same-sex relationship Emojis like families with two mothers and two fathers. Some of the gadget Emojis that have been added includes a representation of the iPhone 6 and an Apple Watch (as a replacement to the traditional watch). Emojis for 32 more country flags have also been added to the keyboard. But guess what, no Nigerian flag is represented.

Here is what the new Emoji keyboard looks like:Apple Releases iOS 8.3 To The Public-new-emojis-Jide-salu
